Happy New Year People! This is the first image of 2013. From a recent shoot with Quintaria, whose an absolute professional. I'm sorry if my description isn't what it has been in the past and that I'm too lazy to attach the appropriate tags. I'm kinda out of practice and working my way back into the groove of things. :)
Also, I won't be posting any strobist information on any of my future images and will be going back to delete that same information on pass images. So, strobe away while you can. Enjoy!

Strobist Info: 2x Einstein left and right into strip box @f/8. WL800 front and back into 7" reflector gridded 20 degress. All fired via Pocketwizard.
Today we shot this image for Phlearn.com, where we show the complete setup of all the lights and how we got the shot!
We will be posting a FREE tutorial on how to bring everything together in Photoshop and make this awesome image come to life.

Lighting
We wanted to keep the lighting fairly simple in these images in order to show off the detail of the beetles, but not become a distraction. It is also important that while the key light is almost directly straight on, that shadow and highlight definition are maintained. If you use a light source that is too large at such a close distance you will wind up with images that don't have a clear boundary between highlight and shadow.
For the key we used an 11-inch Long Throw reflector, usually reserved for point lights. Because it was so close to our subject, and only a small area needed to be lit, the falloff was not an issue here. This harsh light provides nice highlight detail while also producing shadows.
For the background we used 2 strip lights pointed towards a white seamless. The lights hit the seamless, exposing it properly and because the surface is white, it allowed a lot of light to be reflected. Some of this reflected light came back and hit the back side of the model, giving a faint rim light.

Last weekend I had a great time with pro skier Jon Olsson and his new sick car.. A LP670 SV with a ski box. I know, something is wrong with this guy! The car is also equipped with an after market exhaust from SMR.. It throws flames like a bad ass dragon!

Btw... I borrowed Jon's 5D MkII, the performance is awesome.. But I'll never leave Nikon.. (I hope)

dajizzle THE RETURN
Via Flickr:
Sometimes we feel like we are trapped in a mundane string of events. We wake up, go to work, etc. We feel like bursting free of all the everyday repetitions and living free. Well, as a creative individual, sometimes we become bogged down with the rituals of creativity (a real burden, I know). We make sure that we have a certain workflow, etc. And why that's all good and well, sometimes we have to operate creatively and free flowing. Let's roll with the punches and finish the fight! Let's create our own rules or make them up as we go. Lol! So, while others rest, I grind. While others play, I work. And while others eat, I eat as well. Lol! Can't starve. :) There's work to be done! So, let's get down to business! #KeepCalmAndStayFresh

In honor Veteran's Day. I want to take the time to thank all of the members of the armed forces that have sacrificed to protect our everyday freedoms and civil liberties. To take it a step further, I would like to thank our elders that have fought to ensure that we have certain civil rights in this nation. You too are also veterans and deserve to be honored this day. So, if you know a veteran, current member of our armed forces, or an elder that has fought for rights that you now enjoy, take out the time today to show your appreciation and tell them "thank you". Those two words can carry you a mighty long way.
